To geek out a bit, the physical vapour deposition (PVD) method used for its black colour involves superheating titanium nitrate so it becomes a plasma that adheres to the surface of the ring, forming a thin ceramic layer of black that’s bound to the surface at the molecular level. This provides a coating that’s far stronger and more durable than traditional plating and is better for the environment.
